Some more memories
When memories go back as they often do I think of all the happy times, in the St, Ann’s Well road I knew How we'd play in a crowd, and go to the park. Play near the lamp post, when it was dark Have a stick of rhubarb and sugar in a newspaper square Remember waiting for nit nurse to comb through your hair Remember Church outings and anniversary do's Posh new frocks and sandal shoes Knitted cardies and jumpers, wool hats to keep warm Getting soaking wet when we had a storm Remember school dinners that miss made you eat Hands up for second pudding, a special treat Remember the pictures, how we used to queue Watch the film twice, use the indoor loo Remember the usherette who shone her torch Waiting for your pals in the entries or porch Chip shops on Fridays for a sixpenny mix Your ice--cream or sucker, everyone had licks Fetching mam a ' bungle of wood' Halfpenny chew if you were good Remember on the buses you gave up your seat Carried bags, for elders you'd meet Running errands, helping out No answering back or you'd get a clout Corner shops, whips and tops Dolls and prams, dads and mams Sharing toys, girls and boys Skipping songs, fever grate pongs Bows and arrows guns and swords Wooden clocks, and long sideboards Lino on the floor and stairs Northampton street for dancing, walk there in pairs Fire guard and toasting fork Sunday dinners, crackling and pork Bath nights, party nights everything was fun Or did I wear rose coloured glasses, when I was young? Hope it's stirred a few memories up, I wrote this many years ago. I couldn’t name all the shops. Hopewell’s, Hallidays barbers -the list is quite long, I have fond memories of them all |
