Douglas Spencer's Shop 1890
Douglas Spencer and his family owned a few different shops in St Ann's. He was a renowned healer and concocted
homemade remedies. He used to say that doctor's mistakes were buried in the churchyard, his great grandaughter
Pauline Fedoriwskji, gave me a picture of the shop on Duncombe street which I had printed in Nottingham Bygones
with the following poem.
Looking at the Douglas Spencer's shop
It's amazing to see all the things he'd got
Everything for washday you could rely on
Washing line, dolly pegs, and a flat iron
Scrubbing board, buckets, bowls and sunlight soap
Hunts carbolic, Rinso, how did they cope ?
There was pots, pans, tea sets galore
Everything there, you couldn't want more
Sugar bowls, baking tins, flasks and shoe laces
Lots of stock, hung up in funny places
Sweeping brushes, scrubbing brush, dust-pan too
Polishes, shopping bags -the stock Douglas had just grew
Wallpaper, turpentine, stepladders, distemper and paint
He also made herbal remedies, Douglas was kind of a saint
If only we could walk inside this shop
Just to see the stock Mr Spencer had got
Those days have long gone
But those sort of shops -and what they sold
Were second to none !
