1956 Holiday Memories
I can remember, being as happy as can be,
to be going on holiday, to Skegness by the sea.
Glorious July with sun so bright, can’t wait to board the train.
It's our holiday of the year, too bad if we get rain.
With cases packed we're on our way, Skegness here we come.
Mam and Dad look so relaxed, we’re going to have some fun.
Arriving at the station, we move gently with the crowd.
We see arcades, slot machines, there's music playing very loud
Standing in a queue, we now aboard a bus
Going through to Ingoldmells, we're excited and we fuss
Oh, are we nearly there mam, will the caravan site be big?
Will there be lots of sand dad, so I can take my spade and dig?
The site owner of the caravan shows us where we are
It's our caravan home for one "whole week" - the beach is not too far
We put our clothes away, we all have a nice cup of tea
Dad says later on we'll have a paddle in the sea
We make up all the beds before we go out for the night
Dad leaves the matches handy, to light the small gas light
So we took a stroll down to the sea, we had a little dip
On our way back to the van, we call for fish and chips
It's only Saturday night and, we've done such a lot
We even called into the pub and had a bottle of pop
Sunday morning early, it's a walk along the sea wall
We've collected lovely shells, and played with a new beach ball
Daddy hires a wind breaker, he sets the deck chairs up
Mam said, oh this is the life, from the daily rut
Then we see the donkeys, come we've got to have a ride
My sister Sue runs off in front, I follow keeping at her side
The weather treats us very kind, we buy ice cream and a whip and top
Plus a pack of happy family cards from the caravan site shop
We spend a day in Mabelthorpe and another in Skegness
The week is nearly over, we say it's been our best
We all have lovely suntans, daddy's very brown
Now it's time to pack our case, we'll soon be homeward bound
We sent our friends a post card, we got them sticks of rock
I had my photo taken in my holiday frock
Its back to school on Monday, in my essay I will say
I've had a smashing time, on my Family holiday
Years they come and go, I've had holidays by the score
But it's nice to turn the clock back and be a child once more !
