FIRST DAY AT SCHOOL
St. Ann's Well Road Board School, Mrs. Brown's class 1956 Did I seem worried on that bright new day Although now as I write, it's a million miles away, They say I got up early, I was up with the lark Our curtains still drawn, I hadn't noticed the dark I'd got new clothes, and shoes "what did shine" Mum and Dad reassured me, you are going to be fine I ate my breakfast, got dressed in my new things I wanted to be at school, before the bell rings Oh there was a coat peg bearing my name All in uniforms , children looking the same We were shown to a classroom, we all sat down That's your desk for now, said Mrs Brown Miss, miss, I've got a slipper bag with plimsoles in it Quiet, children! Don't speak for a minute Then 10:30 came, it was milk with a straw A penny fro a biscuit, we queued by the door Playtime was fun running after one another The girls in one yard, the boys in the other The bell rings again, and it's back to the desk Time to change for PE in knickers and vest Dinner time came, everyone stood in place No one sit down until we've said Grace Fish pie and carrots, it all looked so dull But the pudding looked delicious, I 'm not quite full (after all) Dinner time over, now we learn the three Rs Later in the play ground we will swing on the bars Mrs. Brown said children, put your chair up on the desk It's almost home time, you have all done your best Hands together , close your eyes, I want you all to say I've had a lovely time at school, thank you God for this day I see Mum at the school gate, I start crying tears of sorrow She said tell me all about your day, it won't seem so long tomorrow Tomorrow -- oh no-- oh yes Remember your school days are classed as the best |
