It's "Cowd"
When the weather turns "cowd", and you turn the heating up
I hear mam’s voice, Are you warm enough duck !?
The fire roared up the chimney, being drawn with the Evening Post
We had a toasting fork, so we often had some toast
Mam tips up the fireguard, for two slices at a time
On the hearthrug, plates and butter, we have picnic time
This black lead fireplace is very old, I won't miss all the cleaning
When we get the tiled one, I'll think that I am dreaming
The candle sticks are too big, and there won't be a line for socks
The mirror can go on the other wall, because getting ready, you'll get too hot
Will we sit in front for a bath mam? Will the companion set fit on the hearth?
Will the clothes go around at night mam? Will the Chimney Sweep come?
"Well of Course"
Two months later
I really miss our old fireplace, the shelf was just the right height
I miss the line for socks, and keeping a warm glow at night
I wish I'd kept the candlesticks and that wooden letter rack
And those lovely silver mermaids. Too late now, can't have them back
You've gone and done it again mam, you've changed the old for new
Now you wished you'd kept them, you say, If I only Knew !!
This is from 1959 - sounds a bit silly now, but it must be true I wrote it, Jean
