When I started Infant School When I started infant school, at only five years old It was St Ann’s the old board school where my childhood life unfolds The Headmaster, such a lovely man, his name was Mr Salt The Headmistress Mrs Hayse, always kind not picking fault Teachers helped you were they could... It was ticks and stars if you were good But those of us that messed about got Ruler, Slipper, Cane, or a Clout School was so exciting, there was playtime on the bars The most important lessons, was to study the three Rs Tuesday it was play centre, from half past five till seven Open to all the juniors, ages eight years to eleven Although we had a choir and dancing in the hall We often went to Northampton Street for P. E. with a ball Oh was childhood days so much fun, going off to school To enjoy every minute, was the golden rule So when your thoughts go wondering back, do you see milk with a straw? The playtime, dinnertime, hometime, a school day was nine until four St Ann’s Well Road Board School, we loved you |
