Rene's story in a poem
She was on the last stitches
To finish his socks
He couldn't wait he had to go
Please wait daddy, cried Rene
Mummy wants you to know.
Rene , was an old lady I knew
She told me she found it hard
Running after her dad
As the men marched down" Sneinton Boulevard "
You've got to take the socks dad
He smiled and bowed his head
Would he come home from War
Or would he be one of the dead .
Each stich ,in the socks
Is to keep you warm
Praying that you will ,come to no harm
Mam knows you'll be in the Trenches
Hungry, wet and cold .
Come home daddy
We want to see you grow old
War is a terrible thing
So many people were killed
Their memories will always stand proud
Like the Poppies in the fields
For all our men that sadly died
Buy a poppy
And wear it with pride
Rene's dad did come home
A very different man
He was frail ,not like her dad anymore
His life had changed ,he'd been to war
On the 11th hour of the 11th day
Of the 11th month of the year
We will have our 2 minutes silence
To let our world know, that we care
If it wasn't for these brave men
Life would be different .
I dont think we would be here !
P.S ,Rene was a lovely old lady
That story was told to me over 20 years ago ,Rene was 90 then,
Bless her ,this was at Westmoore Court Mapperley.she was one of the ladies that handed over the Mourndy Money
To finish his socks
He couldn't wait he had to go
